Setup Core Wallet recovery phrase wallet extension guide for beginners

Setup core wallet extension guide for beginners

Use the official Chrome Web Store listing to create a self-custodial vault. Avoid third-party download sites; only install the verified publisher badge. After clicking "Add to Chrome," confirm the permissions dialog requests access only to "read and change data on a limited set of sites" – never grant blanket access to all websites.

To setup your initial account, launch the app from the toolbar icon and select "Create a new vault." Write down the 12-word recovery phrase on paper only. Do not photograph it, store it in a cloud service, or type it into any digital device. Store this paper in a fireproof safe. The app will then ask you to confirm three random words from that phrase to verify your backup is accurate.

For a faster start, you can import wallet credentials using a private key or a JSON keystore file. During this tutorial step, paste the private key directly into the field provided by the interface. Do not copy it to a document or messenger app first. If using a keystore file, upload it and enter the password you originally set. Verify the address displayed matches your balance before proceeding.

After the vault is active, configure the network settings for specific blockchain protocols. By default, the app likely connects to the mainnet. For test transactions, switch to a testnet like Sepolia or Goerli by toggling the network dropdown and selecting one from the list. Each testnet requires its own native test token, which you can request from a public faucet linked within the interface.

Setup Core Wallet Extension Guide for Beginners

Before you start, ensure your browser is updated to the latest version. Open the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons page, search for the official "Avalanche" or "Core" application (developed by Ava Labs), and install it. Once added, click the extension icon in your browser toolbar to open the popup interface. You will be offered two options: "Create a new vault" or "Import existing wallet". For this guide, choose the first option if you have no prior crypto storage.

Click "Create a new vault". You will see a list of 12 or 24 recovery words. Write them down on paper only–never type them on a computer or phone, never store them in cloud services. Each word must be recorded exactly as displayed, in the correct sequence. After confirming the words, set a strong password (at least 12 characters, including numbers and symbols). This password locks the extension locally; losing it means you need the recovery phrase to regain access.

After creation, the vault is empty. To test the create wallet process, send a small amount of AVAX from an exchange or another wallet to the displayed address. Always double-check the first three and last four characters of the address to avoid mistyping. Use the "Receive" button inside the extension to copy the correct address. Never share your private key or recovery phrase with anyone.

If you already have an existing vault from MetaMask or a Ledger device, use the import wallet option. Select "Import via private key" or "Import via seed phrase". Ensure you are on a secure, private network. For a 24-word phrase, enter each word in lowercase, separated by spaces. The extension will automatically detect the protocol (Ethereum or Avalanche C-Chain). Do not import a phrase you copied from a suspicious website; scammers often simulate this tutorial to steal funds.

For advanced safety, avoid keeping significant value in a browser extension. Treat it as a hot wallet for small, daily transactions. Use a hardware device (Ledger or Trezor) for storage of large amounts. Within the extension, check the "Connected Sites" panel habitually. Remove any site you do not recognize. The vault resides in your browser's local storage; clearing cookies or browser data does not delete it, but reinstalling the extension without the recovery phrase does.

To access the full feature set (staking, bridging, swaps), confirm the extension is on the correct network (Avalanche C-Chain, Ethereum, or Polygon). View recent transactions in the "Activity" tab. If the balance does not appear, click the "Refresh" button or wait a few minutes for nodes to sync. This guide covers only the initial setup; repeat the "evaluate risk" step after each software update to maintain security.

Downloading and Installing the Correct Wallet Extension from the Official Source

Visit only the official project website listed on the project’s GitHub repository or its documented community wiki. For example, if you need a browser-based cryptocurrency account manager, navigate directly to the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or Edge Add-ons page using the verified publisher link. Check the publisher name matches the exact developer name shown in the official project’s Readme file (e.g., “MetaMask” or “Phantom”). Avoid search engine results or promoted ads, as phishing clones often rank first. Click “Add to [Browser]” and confirm the permission prompt that appears–legitimate apps request specific, minimal access (e.g., “read and change data on websites you visit”), not broad permissions like “access your browsing history.”

Once installed, pin the application to your toolbar for quick access. Open it and locate the “create wallet” option–do not use “import” unless you have a recovery phrase ready. Follow this primer: generate a strong password (12+ characters with symbols and numbers), click “reveal seed phrase,” and write down the 12 or 24 words on paper only, offline. Never screenshot or type them digitally. Confirm the phrase by selecting the words in the exact order prompted. This tutorial-based approach ensures your account is secured from the first click. After completing the registration, the interface will display your public address (starting with “0x” or similar), confirming the installation was successful.
